This week, US President Joe Biden announced that he will not seek reelection in the race against former US President Donald Trump in the upcoming US election in 2024. This announcement sent shockwaves through the political system across the nation. After deciding to step down as the Democratic party’s presidential candidate, Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic candidate.
There are various reasons why Joe Biden decided to withdraw from the presidential race, such as his performance in the debate with Donald Trump and the Republican Party making a series of jibes at Biden over his inability to finish another term as president. Many Democrat lawmakers also called for Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race following the debacle at the debate.
Before the time Joe Biden was ousted, what had happened?
On Sunday, the Washington Post reported that Vice President Kamala Harris was the first to receive a message from Joe Biden informing them that he had decided to withdraw himself from the running to reelect him. In addition, during his travels, Biden held a one-on-one conversation with White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and his campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon.
Ultimately, Zients requested a meeting with Joe Biden and White House staff at approximately 1:45 pm to ensure they could discuss the decision with the U.S. president and inform them about his choice. In the afternoon, around 2:30 pm on Sunday, the Chief of Staff at the White House formally announced the decision to all staff members.
As reported by The Washington Post, Biden decided on Saturday during different discussions in which he met with White House Counselor Steve Ricchetti as well as senior campaign adviser Mike Donilon, Deputy Chief of Staff Annie Tomasini, and senior adviser to First Lady Anthony Bernal, all of who were in the president’s holiday home at the time.
What was the reason that led Joe Biden to end his run for reelection?
The demands for Joe Biden to step down as the US presidential candidate increased following his shaky debate performance with Donald Trump on June 27 as the face of the US presidential campaign.
Although Biden claimed that the US president blamed his poor performance on the effects of jet lag and traveled abroad, however, the majority of members of his Democratic Party urged him to step down as the party’s leader.
There is growing opposition against Biden’s ongoing campaign within his party has gotten more ferocious over the last week and has seen 36 Democratic lawmakers in Congress more than one in eight – insisting that he drop out of the race because of worries about his health.
The result was that lawmakers from the ruling party voiced their displeasure with Biden’s decision to run for reelection. They said they feared Biden, should he be elected, could ruin their chances of winning their seats in the White House and the opportunity to control any chamber of Congress in the coming year.
News agency Reuters said that Biden experienced a “last-minute change of heart” at the end of Saturday night. At the time, Biden had no intention of pulling out of the race. It was not until Sunday afternoon that Biden’s decision was changed after several discussions with the president’s top advisers, and changed his thinking.
